If there is no God, death is the end. Thus, the only thing the atheist knows for sure is death will put an end to his existence - and it can any moment. If we become nothing, we are nothing, so no significance is possible. If as persons we will cease to exist, our existence may have some relative meaning and significance for some event of history or other persons - but since all persons, the history and the whole Universe will become nothing - our life has zero significance, purpose, value in total.
At the end of the day - no atheist can be happy if he lives according to his standards!
