To know the ropes

To know the ropes is to be informed about the details of a situation or task, or to have a fundamental understanding of how something works.

The expression may have a nautical origin, alluding to sailors learning the rigging and knots of a sailing vessel, or a theatrical origin, referring to stagehands knowing which ropes to pull for curtains and scenery. The expression has been used as a metaphor since the 1840s45.
