Отец с Тобаго привозил бумажники
цветных купюр. Работал подмастерьем
в строительстве у Тома. Если мог,
тащил меня с собою в «Чекс»
на угол Кольцевой и Первой: мультики,
коктейль с арахисом. И обнимал за плечи.
А раз принёс коробку книг — американских,
из той библиотеки, что он строил
в Сент-Августинском университете.
Обложки Rainy Day с собакой в кукурузе,
с веснушчатыми мальчиками в джинсах
среди огромных тракторных колёс.
Псалмы воскресным утром на Второй
вот-вот наполнят воздух за домами.

My father arriving from Tobago with billfolds
of purple money. He had been working
as a prentice builder with Mr Tom. Come now,
come Sunday, he sweeps down and takes me to Chex
on the corner of First and Circular, for Top Cat comics
and peanut punch. He even put his hand on my shoulder.
He'd brought a box of books this time.
Big American books from a library he'd helped to build
at the university in St Augustine.
Rainy-day books with paintings of dogs in muddy corn,
and freckled boys in checkered shirts and jeans
beside tractor wheels tall as dogwood trees.
It was Sunday morning on Second Avenue. Gospel radios
would soon fill the air around those houses.
