Carl Gustav Jung 1875-1961

Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology. He was one of the pioneers of modern depth psychology and psychoanalysis. Jung developed ideas and methods of inquiry that have deepened and broadened our understandings of personality, psychodynamics, and the shaping energies of social history. He proposed and developed the concepts of the extraverted and the introverted personality, archetypes, and the collective unconscious. Jung believed in the “complex,” or emotionally charged associations. He collaborated with Sigmund Freud, but disagreed with him about the sexual basis of neuroses. Jung’s work has been influential in the fields of psychiatry, anthropology, archaeology, literature, philosophy, psychology, and religious studies1.

Jung’s impact on modern psychology is significant. His theories have influenced many fields including art therapy, literary criticism, and religion2. His work on archetypes has been particularly influential in advertising and marketing2. His concept of the collective unconscious has also been influential in modern psychology3.

Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud were both psychoanalysts who developed their theories together, but they had some major disagreements that led to different schools of thought. Some of the differences between Freud and Jung are:

Freud focused on human behavior and repressed emotions, while Jung explored the human psyche and its various aspects.
Freud believed that the conscious mind repressed emotions, while Jung believed that the conscious mind worked on emotions constructively.
Freud believed that the unconscious mind was driven by aggression and sex, while Jung believed that the unconscious mind was influenced by lived emotions.1
The biggest difference between their explanations of the unconscious mind is that Freud believed that it was the product of personal experiences, while Jung believed that the unconscious was inherited from the past collective experience of humanity.
