The General Directory for the County of Somerset, Taunton, 1840, printed and published by William Bragg includes an entry for Kingsbrompton - click here to view.

Finally, a comment about the name of the village - Kingsbrompton or Brompton Regis. There does not seem to be any evidence of when either name was adopted or any evolution of the name from Kingsbrompton to Brompton Regis and it seems that both names have been used in the past. A map of Somerset-shire dated 1610 shows the name as Brupton regis, another map of Somersetshire dated 1787 shows it as Brompton Regis as does another map dated 1890. However, another map of Somerset dated 1888, shows it as Kings Brompton. The only formal record that we have of the change (click here) is the church register of baptisms and burials in October 1885, when there was also a change in vicar.

The site of the original Royal Manor, which has been a matter of much conjecture, is thought most likely to have been on the site of the present Kingsbrompton Farm.

holiday letting cottage, subject to all the necessary

The property has a pretty sitting room,

glazed door to the front of the house which faces
south and a fireplace with a wood burning stove.

The kitchen also provides a breakfast area and leads
out to a large hall / boot room.

Some of the integral
outbuildings could also be incorporated into the
accommodation to provide more reception space or
to enhance the existing annexe wing.

The Location

Hiccombe Green
is situated within the tiny hamlet of
Hiccombe,

being within

Exmoor National Park,

and is
on the lower slopes of the valley through which the
Haddeo River flows.

direction and is also convenient for day to day
amenities.

Taunton, the County Town of Somerset, is
also within reach with a good shopping centre,
excellent schools, both in the state and independent
sectors, and is the home of the County Cricket
Ground.

with M5 motorway junction (Junction 25) providing
fast and easy access to Exeter, Bristol and The
Midlands, and a main line station with fast trains to
London Paddington, scheduled to arrive in an hour
and forty five minutes.

Full Description

A building is shown on the Brompton Regis Tithe Map at SS 9560 2998. It is L shaped, with the main building aligned east to west and a further, smaller section running south from the western end. It is labelled 991, which the accompanying Apportionment data describes as "Hiccombe Green: House Garden etc", owned and occupied by Mary Howe.

By the time the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map had been surveyed, the smaller section of the building appears to have been removed and an outbuilding constructed at SS 9558 2998. Two further smaller outbuildings are shown at SS 9560 2997 and SS 9561 2997. The building is part of a settlement labelled as "Hiccombe".

The arrangement described in     is repeated on the 2nd Edition map.

The 2018 MasterMap data shows that the main building and larger outbuilding appear to have been joined up. Only the second of the smaller outbuildings appears to remain.

Kiss me
Kiss me a lot
Like it was tonight
The last time
Kiss me
Kiss me a lot
That I'm afraid of losing you
Losing yourself after
Kiss me (kiss me)
Kiss me a lot

The last time
Kiss me
Kiss me a lot
That I'm afraid of losing you
Losing yourself after
I want to keep you very close
Looking at me in your eyes
To see you next to me
Think maybe tomorrow
I'll be far away
Very far from here
Kiss me

Kiss me
Kiss me a lot
That I'm afraid of losing you
Losing yourself after
I want to keep you very close
Looking at me in your eyes
To see you next to me
Think maybe tomorrow
I'll be far away
Very far from here
Kiss me
Kiss me a lot
Like it was tonight
The last time
Kiss me
Kiss me a lot
That I'm afraid of losing you
Losing yourself after
Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me (kiss me, kiss me, kiss, kiss me a lot)
Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me (kiss me, kiss me, kiss, kiss me a lot)
Kiss me, kiss me (kiss me, kiss me, kiss, kiss me a lot)
Kiss me, a lot
Kiss me a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot
(Kiss me, kiss me, kiss, kiss me a lot)
(Kiss me, kiss me, kiss, kiss me a lot)
(Kiss me, kiss me, kiss, kiss me a lot)

Besame
Besame mucho
Como si fuera esta noche
La ultima vez
Besame
Besame mucho
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte despues
Besame (besame)
Besame mucho
Como si fuera esta noche
La ultima vez
Besame
Besame mucho
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte despues
Quiero tenerte muy cerca
Mirarme en tus ojos
Verte junto a mi
Piensa que tal vez manana
Ya estare lejos
Muy lejos de aqui
Besame
Besame mucho
Como si fuera esta noche
La ultima vez
Besame
Besame mucho
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte despues

Brompton Regis (formerly known as Kingsbrompton) is a village and civil parish in the Somerset West and Taunton district of Somerset, England about 5 miles (8.0 km) north-east of Dulverton. It is situated on the River Pulham in the Brendon Hills within the Exmoor National Park, close to Wimbleball Lake, a water supply reservoir constructed in the 1970s and completed in 1979.

According to the 2011 census the village had a population of 449.
The parish boundary is marked by the River Exe which is crossed by the medieval Chilly Bridge and Hele Bridge. The Haddeo is crossed by Bury Bridge.

The parish includes the village of Withiel Florey, where the Church of St Mary Magdalene has 12th-century origins and has been designated as a Grade II* listed building, and the hamlets of Bury, Gupworthy and Hartford.

History

Before the Norman Conquest
the manor was held by Gytha Thorkelsdottir
and was seized by William the Conqueror.

The parish of Withiel Florey was part of the Taunton Deane Hundred,
while Brompton Regis was part of the Williton and Freemanners Hundred.

By the later 12th century
Brompton Regis had been granted to William de Say,
who founded Barlynch Priory in the west of the parish.

Research Notes
Manor of Saye's Court
"William his son succeeded him, and died anno 56 Henry III. holding this manor in capite by barony, and the repair of a house in Dover-castle, called, from its possessors, Saye's-tower. (fn. 10) His son of the same name, accounted at the Exchequer for twenty-seven fees of the honour of Magminot; that is, twenty-six of the old feoffment and one of the new, which shews the large extent of his possessions. He died anno 23 king Edward I. possessed of this manor, leaving Geoffrey his son and heir, (fn. 11) who married Idonea, daughter of William de Leyborne (who survived him) and died possessed of it, in the 15th of king Edward II. leaving Geoffrey de Saye, his son, who, in the 8th of king Edward III. obtained the king's charter for free warren for all his demean lands in his lordships of Greenwich, Deptford, &c. with the view of frankpledge and other privileges, and died in the 33d year of it, leaving William his son and heir, and Maud his wife, surviving, (daughter of Guy de Beauchamp, earl of Warwick) and three daughters, who afterwards became their brother's heirs, as will be further mentioned."[5]
Sawbridgeworth Manor
"In 1222 Geoffrey de Say, son of the last-mentioned Geoffrey, received the grant of a market to be held at Sawbridgeworth on Saturday. (fn. 18) By another grant the following year the day was changed to Friday. (fn. 19) William de Say, son and successor of Geoffrey, probably inclosed the park, for in 1237 he was allowed ten bucks from the king's forest of Essex to place in his park of Sawbridgeworth. (fn. 20) In 1245 he obtained a licence for free warren in his manor. (fn. 21) The extent taken at his death in 1272 mentions the park and warren. (fn. 22) William de Say, his son and successor, was presented before the commissioners of Edward I for having appropriated free warren on alien fees and on the lands of his tenants. (fn. 23) He claimed the liberties of gallows, view of frankpledge, assize of bread and ale, pillory, tumbrel and prison at Sawbridgeworth as belonging to the honour of Mandeville and exercised by his ancestors. These were allowed him. (fn. 24) William de Say died in 1295. (fn. 25)"[6]

"William (Say) de Say"     (bef. 1209 - bef. 1272)
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Say-77

de Say
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

de Say
de Say (Saye, Sai)
is the surname of an old Norman noble family originating from Sai, Orne.
The first records are about
William de Say and
Picot de Say,
Norman conquerors.
The de Say family, held lands in England and France.

French origin
The family descends from Picot Avenel de Say, a vassal of Robert I, Duke of Normandy.
His son
Robert Fitz-Picot, Lord of Aunay, was co-founder in 1060, of the abbey of St Martin at Seez.

England
William and Robert de Say (also called Picot de Say)
were the sons of Robert Fitz-Picot and his wife Adelaide.   They accompanied William the Conqueror in 1066.

William de Say's descendants inherited the manor of West Greenwich,
now known as Deptford, and adopted the Maminot arms, Quarterly, or and gules

Robert de Say
Robert de Say, also called Picot de Say,
was a Norman knight who arrived in Shropshire after the Norman invasion.
He was the son of Robert Fitz-Picot and his wife Adelaide of Normandy.
The family name de Say comes from the Norman village of Sai, in Orne.

Clun Castle

Robert de Say obtained lands in Shropshire, building a motte and bailey castle, known as Clun Castle overlooking the lands he had seized from Edric the Wild after the invasion.[5] Robert was an important vassal of Roger of Montgomery, the 1st Earl of Shrewsbury and a major early Norman magnate.[6] Robert died in 1098.[7]

His daughter married the local Welsh lord, Cadwgan ap Bleddyn, who acquired permission to move to England, probably Clun, in 1109.[8] Upon Picot de Say's death in 1098, the castle passed to his son, Henry de Say, who continued possession of Clun Castle.

Bury Castle near Brompton Regis in the English county of Somerset was an Iron Age univallate hillfort which was reused with the creation of a motte after the Norman Conquest. It has been scheduled as an ancient monument.

Iron Age fort

It is an oval enclosure just above the confluence of the River Haddeo and River Exe.
It is approximately
120 yards   (110 m)    long      and
80 yards      (73 m)        wide.

Medieval period

In the late 1130s,
a civil war,
known as
the Anarchy,
broke out in England
between the supporters of

King Stephen

The remains of 60-year-old ex-Commissioner Malcolm Baker were found in a cottage in Somerset County, where a fire and explosion occurred on September 14.

As a result, the roof and part of the walls collapsed.

According to the neighbors, the valve on the gas cylinder was opened intentionally.

The police confirmed to the publication that no third parties were involved in the events that took place.

The blast happened at the cottage, named Hiccombe House,
at about 6pm on September 14 [2022].
Incinerated human remains were found by search specialists sifting
through the ruins of the property in Exmoor National Park.
DNA tests were being carried out on the remains to confirm they are those of Mr Baker, who worked on the Alexander Litvinenko poisoning and the 9/11 atrocities.
Mr Baker’s partner, pig breeder Francesca Onody, was not at the property at the time.

Neighbours feared a terror connection to his death but Mr Baker is believed to have killed himself because of domestic problems.

Police confirmed: “At this stage we don’t believe there is any third-party involvement and we are not seeking anyone else in connection with our inquiries.”

The ex-Scotland Yard Superintendent died when the blaze ripped through his thatched cottage
It triggered an explosion which was heard a mile away and took off the roof and upper walls of the remote period property, which had no fixed gas supply.

Neighbours believe the valve on a liquid propane gas bottle was deliberately opened to cause the blast.

Incinerated human remains were found by search specialists sifting through the ruins of the property in Exmoor National Park.

DNA tests were being carried out on the remains to confirm they are those of Mr Baker, who worked on the Alexander Litvinenko poisoning and the 9/11 atrocities.

As a result, the roof and part of the walls collapsed. According to the neighbors, the valve on the gas cylinder was opened intentionally. The police confirmed to the publication that no third parties were involved in the events that took place.

In June, it was reported that the defendant in the Litvinenko murder case died from the effects of coronavirus.

Litvinenko died in 2006 in London, where he received political asylum. The cause of death was poisoning with radioactive polonium-210. British investigators concluded that the Russian authorities were involved in the crime, while Moscow, in turn, denies such accusations, emphasizing that the criminal case was politicized.

In September 2021, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) concluded that the Russian side had not provided the materials necessary for the investigation and had not conducted a sufficiently thorough independent investigation into Litvinenko's death. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the ECHR's decision on Russia's "responsibility" for the death of an ex-FSB employee erroneous.
