Rat and Bat

One morning little light-grey Rat
Woke up all happy in her bed:
That day she was to meet her friend
Her darling playmate - brown Bat.

So, smiling broadly up she sat
Then out of her bed she leapt,
And started putting on her vest
With light impatience in her chest.

But shortly she got cross and mad
Because she failed to find her hat!
She cried, and stomped her feet, and beat
And threw her things around the flat.

"You look so angry! - Mother said. -
Well, it's OK to be incensed,
You know, I'd also act like that
If I had lost my favorite hat!

Breathe deeply, take a paper pad
And draw an angry squiggle on that,
Then touch your nose and shake your head
And we'll go searching for your hat".

They found the hat beneath the bed
And all Rat's grumpiness had fled.
She got all dressed and after that
Began her journey to the Bat.

She sang a songlet as she went
As she felt cheerful and glad,
But anxious as they hadn't met
For many years with the Bat.

"Just breathe, my dear, - Mother said, -
You're so excited, darling Rat".
And soon they reached the Bat's small flat
And all anxiety had left.

They hugged so tightly as they met -
The brown Bat and light-grey Rat,
They talked so much, and laughed, and ate...
They'd missed each other really bad.

But suddenly all wrong it went
When at some point did the Bat
Say something nasty to the Rat,
Some words, that couldn't but offend.

The Rat went crying as she felt
As if a choking ball of bread
Had stuck between her throat and head.
"Oh, you're offended, - Mother said, -

It's so unpleasant feeling that
So let us put your loving hand
Upon that nasty ball of bread
And spend some time on feeling that".

The Bat felt horribly ashamed
So bad did she insult her friend...
She felt her shame run down her head
Deep in her belly through her breast.

She let it pour and then she said:
"I am so sorry, dear Rat!"
Rat felt relieved on hearing that
And hugged her darling playmate Bat.

Their time together slipped like sand
And presently it came to end,
They cuddled warmly, Bat and Rat,
Both sorry that to part they had.

Rat waved goodbye and as she left
She felt so grievous and so sad
As she would miss her dear friend
The sweet and lovely darling Bat.

Her Father hugged her with his hand:
"You look so cute when you're upset!
Let's sit together, rest your head
And let your sorrow pour like sand".

The Rat felt grateful to her dad,
She leaned upon his loving hand
And rested all assured that
Her every feeling she would pet.
