there lived an old man with his old woman
by the very shore of a blue sea;
they lived in a shabby dugout
thirty years and three years even.
the old man was fishing with a seine,
the old woman was spinning her yarn.
once he threw a seine into the sea,
the seine came with only a silt.
another time he threw a seine,
a seine came with sea grass.
for the third time he threw a seine, -
a seine came with one little fish,
with not a simple fish - the gold one.
how the goldfish did beg!
she did quethen in a voice of a human:
“let me go, old man, into the sea,
for myself, I will give a prized ransom:
I will shell out whatever you would wish."
the old man was amazed and got frightened:
he was fishing for thirty years and three years more,
and ever unheard the fish speaking.
he eased free the wonder the goldfish,
and he said to her a gracious word:
“God be with you, little goldfish!
I do not need your precious and pay-off;
go in peace into the blue sea,
stroll there in joy in a wideness."

the old man returned to the old woman,
he told her a wondrous marvel.
“today I nearly did seize a little fish,
the goldfish, not plain one;
the fish spoke just like we do,
asked to let her go home, the blue sea,
at a high price she wanted to pay off:
she would give out whatever I would wish.
I did not dare to take from her a ransom;
free I let her into the blue sea."
the old woman scolded the old man:
"you are fool, such a simp you are!
you could not take a ransom from a fish!
if only you took a trough from her,
ours is fully got cleaved."
