To be trustworthy, credible, authentic, or morally acceptable. Usually used in negative constructions.
Many feel that the new pro-drilling legislation doesn't pass the smell test, suspecting that Big Oil had a hand in its creation.
We have to make sure that our financial returns pass the smell test with the auditor.
