sky-blue dress

I’m dropping plates and spilling wine.
This party is so far from fine.
Why are they making such a mess?
I used to love this sky-blue dress
Back in the days when life felt light,
But now this dress is way too tight.
I’m close to tears but no one knows.
I force a smile to hide my woes.
I’m craving silence - but alas…
Will someone just refill my glass?
Oblivion, quiet, peace – but no,
Another round, they just won’t go.
This rowdy man, his silly hat,
The giggly girl, the lute, all that
Infernal noise, the drink, the food,
The jokes I’ve never understood…
Will someone just refill my glass?
Will all these people go at last?
So hot, so deafening, so late…
I turn my back on them and wait
For them to see that they’ve outstayed
Their welcome – and I’m not their maid.
I feel like screaming but instead
I drop my glass and go to bed.
Tomorrow I’ll get up and press
My badly fitting sky-blue dress.

Jan Steen, Merry Company on a Terrace, c.1670

Весёлые стихи, как и картина. Чудесный рефрен - Will someone just refill my glass?

А вот такую справку дают об этой картине в Мет: Steen made a specialty of self-deprecating depictions of his own unruly household. This painting centers on the inviting figure of his wife, who looks out at the viewer with an empty wineglass in her hand. Steen, his face flushed with drink and a comic hat on his head, sits at the far left; next to him, with a sausage in his cap, is Hans Worst, the same theatrical figure depicted by Hals in a nearby work. To this day in the Netherlands, "a household by Jan Steen" remains proverbial for disorder and domestic chaos.
Всего доброго
