Old fears

It can happen to us all,
when we seem to be all right,
being hidden by a wall
from anxiety and fright.

Old terrors are concealed,
any misery is banished,
wounds appear to be healed,
nightmares to be vanished…

Life is comfortable and
no clouds on horizon,
all is going as planned,
with your hopes only rising.

Like thunder from the sky,
unforeseen and unexpected,
an event can make you cry,
from your hopes disconnected.

It can happen to us all,
and it happens on occasions,
causing pain, downfall,
or destroying your relations:

in the depth of former hurts,
in the pit of former fears,
what’s forgott’n now subverts
present days and future years.

Tossed in the emotions stream,
you are lost and don’t know,
if it is a dreadful dream,
or it is a real blow.

Old fears can re-surge,
by anxieties injected.
Who can us from fears purge,
if we are by them affected?

Jesus knows all your past,
of your troubles He’s aware.
Give them all to Him at last,
for His Providence and care.

If you follow His way
by rejecting all your pride,
He will comfort you and stay
every moment by your side.

He will open your view,
He will wipe away your tears.
When His Spirit dwells in you,
He will cast away your fears.

Fear can creep up on us when we least expect it. Things like watching a loved one go through cancer treatment, or the potential of losing a job, having a miscarriage, or getting into a car accident...Unfortunately, there isn’t a limit to what our brains can concoct that is potentially fearful, some of it legitimate and some of it irrational. Either way, we can find hope and an anchor in the storm  in Jesus.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” ~ Psalm 23:4

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” ~ Psalm 27:1

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.” ~ Psalm 46:1–3

"For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.” ~ Isaiah 41:13

"You shall not fear them, for it is the LORD your God who fights for you." ~ Deuteronomy 3:22

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” ~ Philippians 4:6-7

“Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.” ~ John 14:27

“Humble yourselves, then, under God’s mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time.  Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.” ~ 1 Peter 5:6-7

“'For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.  Do not be afraid, for I myself will help you,' declares the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.” ~ Isaiah 41:13-14

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”…He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.  You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.  A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you…For he will command his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways…“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.  He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him…” ~ Psalm 91:1-16
