To my friend Jerry Pierson for his 80th birthday

To the guy at the other end
            of the parachute table

It seems to me, Jerry – you’ll surely guess
That it is your Birthday today
When a big bunch of greetings – a hundred, not less –
Come all of a sudden to your address
From ones for whom you’re a mainstay
For whom you’re an uncle, a friend, a sweet heart,
Who value much your every trait,
From those ones with who you are so long apart,
Who happen to live very far away but
Who know for certain – you’re great.
You’re handsome and smart, a mechanical guy  –
The latter is top of the poll,
And your sense of humor somehow matches mine
And the parachute table is a fair reason why
In the hundred I am. Well, that’s all.
