Forbearing someone's shortcoming,
remarks unkind, haughty, snide,
in inner heart overcoming
offended self and angered pride...
This is what Jesus calls today
for us to practice and apply
in daily life, and to pray,
discarding each offence and lie.
Not for a gain or a show,
forgiving simply, out of heart,
by keeping heart for anger slow,
by giving someone a new start.
Rejecting slanderous words and pain,
by exercising self-control,
the mind will remain sane,
with patience filling up my soul.
All them, who try to undermine
or to insult, I pray for them,
by trusting providence divine,
I cannot judge, I can't condemn.
When I forgive offenses grievous,
I'm granted power to live,
because my God, my Lord, my Jesus
will my offences then forgive.
