Cheyenne

There’s no adventure in war, no gloss.
It takes you hostage and makes you numb.
I came back alive but I felt so lost
I’d be on the brink for years to come.
I’d go to a bar and I’d pick a fight,
I’d lock myself in and I'd punch the walls.
I got to the point where I couldn’t find
An end to my war.

She was like me, abandoned and scarred.
It all started changing when
I gave her a home and she healed my heart,
Cheyenne.
I rescued her from a hopeless place.
I was in one too but then
She listened and licked the tears from my face,
Cheyenne.

A pit bull can tear you apart, they say,
Aggressive breed - but she proved them wrong.
She looks after me and the pain goes away.
I look after her and we soldier on.
So many in shelters and millions die
Without a chance to be loved again.
They don’t give up hope so why should I?
I have Cheyenne.

She was like me, abandoned and scarred,
It all started changing when
I gave her a home and she healed my heart,
Cheyenne.
I rescued her from a hopeless place.
I was in one too but then
She listened and licked the tears from my face,
Cheyenne.
