«За совершение таинства». - «For administration  of  the sacrament».
Туды её в качель. - Durn it.
Я - фирма старая. - Mine's an old firm, though.
Гроб, как огурчик, отборный, на любителя. - The coffins are like gherkins, specially selected for people who know a good coffin.
Что же случилось? Сильнейший сердечный припадок. - What's happened? Very severe heart attack.


Глава 2. Кончина мадам Петуховой. Chapter Two. Madame Petukhov's Demise

«Все там будем». - «We all have to go sometime».
«Бог дал, бог и взял». - «What the Lord gives, the Lord takes back».
Бывший пролетарий умственного труда. - A former member of the proletariat  intelligentsia.
Что доктор? В страхкассе разве доктора? - What doctor? Do you call those people in the social-insurance office doctors?
И здорового залечат! - They're enough to send a healthy man to his grave!
Теперь вся сила в гемоглобине. - Haemoglobin is  what counts nowadays.
Простой деревянный cосновый. -  Just an ordinary coffin made of pine-wood.
Cядьте около меня. Я должна рассказать вам… - Sit close to me. I want to tell you something.
Я зашила бриллианты в стул. - I sewed my jewels into the seat of a chair.
Но ведь это же безумие! Как вы похожи на свою дочь! - But hat was madness! You're just like your daughter!
И поездка в Тулузу... - And a trip to Cannes...
Гроб - он работу любит. - There's lots of work goes into a coffin.
«Преставилась». - «She passed away».
«Богу душу отдала». - She has departed this life».
«В ящик сыграл». - «You popped off».
«Приказал долго жить». - «Breathe his last».
«Перекинулся». - «He has croaked».
«Ноги протянул». - «He has gone west».
«Дуба дал». - «He has kicked  the bucket».
Я человек маленький. Скажут «гигнулся Безенчук». - «I'm small fry. They'll say, 'Bezenchuk's gone'».
Черт с тобой! Делай! Глазетовый! С кистями! - Go on then, damn you, make it! With brocade! And tassels!

Кому астролябию? - Who wants an astrolabe?
Скидка для делегаций и женотделов! - Special reduction for delegations and women's work divisions!
Сама меряет. - It measures by itself.
Рождённые (невесты) до исторического материализма? - Ones born before historical materialism?
- Буржуй?
- Сам ты буржуй! А он - предводитель дворянства!
[- A member of the bourgeoisie?
- Bourgeoisie yourself! But He is a Marshal of the Nobility.]
Мой папа - турецко-подданный. - My dad was a Turkish citizen.
Начать карьеру многожёнца без дивного, серого в яблоках костюма, было невозможно. - To begin a career as a polygamist without a heavenly grey polka-dot suit was unthinkable.
Низкий сорт, нечистая работа. - Poor workmanship.
Продать картину “Большевики пишут письмо Чемберлену”. - To sell the picture "The Bolsheviks Answer Chamberlain".

Никому не говорите, что меня видели, - могут и впрямь подумать, что я эмигрант. - Don't  tell  anyone you saw me, - They might really think  I'm an emigre.
Спокойно! - Всё в порядке! - Take it easy, everything's all right!
Конгениально! - That's more like it!


Глава 6. Бриллиантовый (Брильянтовый) дым. - Chapter Six. A Diamond Haze

Лёд тронулся, господа присяжные заседатели. - Things are moving, gentlemen of the jury.
И три нитки жемчуга. -  And three strings of pearls.
Сколько стоила вся эта музыка? - How much did all this jazz cost?
Человек из Парижа. - Dear friend from Paris.
- Плюньте на всё это!
- Как плюнуть?!
- Слюной, как плевали до эпохи исторического материализма.
[- I wouldn't give a damn about it.
- What do you mean, not give a damn?
- Just that. Like they used to before the advent of historical materialism.]
Спокойно. За дело берусь я. - Take it easy. I'll take charge.
Заседание продолжается. - The hearing is continued.
Соцстрах можете за меня не платить. - You needn't pay my national health.
Грабёж средь бела дня! - That's daylight robbery!
Может быть, Вы хотите, чтобы я работал даром, да ещё дал Вам ключ от квартиры, где деньги лежат? - Maybe you'd like me to work for nothing and also give you the key of the apartment where the money is?
Как говаривал Энди Таккер, я и один могу справиться с Вашим делом! - As Andy Tucker used to say: I can manage your business by myself.

Дворник, тяжёлый, как комод. - The caretaker, as heavy as a chest of drawers.
Ведь это лавочничество! - There's  stinginess for you!
Учитесь жить широко! - You want to learn to live it up!
Всем троим снились сны. - All three had bad dreams.
Тарас Бульба, продающий открытки с видами Днепростроя. - Taras Bulba selling picture postcards of the Dnieper (=Dreprostroy).


Глава 7. Следы “Титаника”. - Сhapter Seven. “Traces of the Titanic”

Всю контрабанду делают в Одессе, на Малой Арнаутской улице. - All contraband is made in Little Arnaut Street in Odessa.
Открыл свои чистые голубые глаза. - Оpened his honest eyes.
Жертва «Титаника». - The victim of the Titanic imploringly.
«Наяда» окрашивает волосы в изумительный каштановый цвет- 'Naiad» re-dyes the hair the «Amazing  chestnut  colour».
Усы дороги вам как память? - Has a moustache some association?
Юное лицо актера без ангажемента. - Rather youthful, face of an unemployed actor.
- Почему так дорого? - Why so expensive?"
- За конспирацию, товарищ фельдмаршал. - For reasons  of security,  Comrade  Field Marshal!
Труба зовёт! - The bugle is sounding!

Сборный пункт - в дворницкой. Парад-алле! - Our rendezvous will be here, in the
caretaker's room. Platoon: «shun!»


Глава 8. Голубой воришка. - Сhapter Eight. The bashful chiseller

Не красть он не мог. -  It was impossible for him not to steal.
Он крал, и ему было стыдно. Крал он постоянно, и постоянно стыдился, - He  stole and was ashamed of himself. He stole constantly and he was constantly ashamed of himself.
Он был застенчивый ворюга. - He was a shy little thief.
Сняли с работы и назначили капельмейстером симфонического оркестра. - He had been dismissed and had been appointed conductor of a symphony orchestra.
Предводитель команчей жил в пошлой роскоши. - The Comanche chief  lived in vulgar luxury.
Я инспектор пожарной охраны. - I'm the fire inspector.
Он не мог не украсть капеллу. - He had not been able to resist selling the wind section of chapel.
Тщательно пережевывая пищу, ты помогаешь Обществу. - By carefully masticating your food you help society.
Изобрёл световую сигнализацию на снегоочистителях.- Someone invented a vented system of signal lights for snow ploughs.
Это сироты. - They're orphans.
Дети Поволжья? - Children of the Volga Region?
Тяжелое наследие царского режима? - A trying heritage from the Tsarist regime?
Пью за ваше коммунальное хозяйство! - Here's to your communal services!
Отчего в вашем кефирном заведении такой скудный инвентарь?.. - Why is it that the furnishings are so skimpy in your establishment?
Вторая струя туальденорового цвета. - Another stream of foam, of mouse-grey in colour.
Назад, жертва аборта! - Come back, you abortion!
Дача взятки должностному лицу при исполнении служебных обязанностей. - Bribing officials in the course of their duty.


Глава 9. Где ваши локоны? - Chapter Nine. Where are your curls?

Где же ваши усы, уважаемый Ипполит Матвеевич? - Where's your moustache, my dear Ippolit Matveyevich?
Где ваши локоны? - What about your curls?
Так это вы, святой отец, охотитесь за моим имуществом? - So you're after my property, Holy Father?
Может быть, вы, святой отец, партийный? - Maybe  you're a member of the  Communist  Party, Holy Father?
Кислое дело. - Too bad.
«Пещера Лехтвейса». - Just like a detective story.
Морду ему мы всегда успеем пощупать. - We can always break his head later.


Глава 10. Слесарь, попугай и гадалка. - Chapter Ten. The mechanic, the parrot, and the fortune-teller

А король-то марьяжный? - What about the King? Does that mean marriage?
Её полуразвалившийся бюст вяло прыгал в перекрашенной кофточке. - Her drooping breasts wobbled lazily inside her dyed blouse.
На голове рос веничек седеющих волос. - Her head was crowned with greying hair.
Она любила сладкое.- She had a sweet tooth.
Это был кипучий лентяй. Он постоянно пенился. - He was an ebullient idler. He  was forever effervescing.
При наличии отсутствия… - Given the absence of …
У, гангрена! - Ugh, that stinker!
Гадюка семибатюшная! Среднее образование имеет! - Seven-sired viper! Secondary education indeed!
Аристократ собачий! - Damn aristocrat!
Усы даром не сбривают. – Moustaches are not shaved off for nothing.
- Он послан из-за границы? –Has  he  been sent from  abroad?"
А вы знаете, чем рискуете? - Do you know what you're risking?


Глава 11. Алфавит - зеркало жизни. - Сhapter Eleven. The mirror-of-life index

Считаю вечер воспоминаний закрытым. - I declare the old boys' reunion over.
А фамилия Михельсон вам нравится? - How do  you  like  the  name Michelson?
Не будьте божьей коровой. - Don't be naive!
Меблированные комнаты «Сорбонна», принадлежавшие Старкомхозу. - The Sorbonne Furnished Rooms, belonging to the Stargorod Communal-Services building.
Только бы ордера достать, только бы ордера! - If only we can  get  the orders! If only we can get them!
Деньги против ордеров. Когда? - Cash on delivery. When shall I?
Ближе к телу. - Let's get to the point.
Чучело медвежье с блюдом. - The stuffed bear with  dish.
Пишите, борец за идею! - Make it out, champion of an idea!
Деньги? Какие деньги? Вы, кажется, спросили про какие-то деньги? – Money? What  money? Did  I hear  you  say something about money?
Говорят русским языком - завтра, значит, завтра. - I'm telling  you in plain Russian - tomorrow means tomorrow.
Пишите письма! - Write to me!
Лед тронулся, господа присяжные заседатели, машинист - Things are moving,
gentlemen of the jury, the driver.
Гарнитур замечательный - пальчики оближете. - It'll make you drool - it's a splendid suite.


Глава 12. Знойная женщина, мечта поэта. - Chapter Twelve. A passionate woman is a poet's dream

Что вы на меня смотрите, как солдат на вошь? - Why are  you  staring  at me like a soldier  at a  louse?
Дурак дураком остался. - The holy father has been  taken for a ride.
Не видать ему стульев, как своей бороды. - He'll see as much of the chairs as his beard.
Что же вы молчите, как архиерей на приеме? - Why are you silent, like an archbishop at a party?
Как же насчет штанов, многоуважаемый служитель культа? - What about my  pants, my dear cleric?
Есть еще от жилетки рукава, круг от бублика и от мертвого осла уши. - There's also the sleeves of a waistcoat, the middle of a doughnut, and the ears of a dead donkey.
Оптом всю партию - дешевле будет. - The  whole  lot is  going  wholesale-it's  cheaper.
Почем опиум для народа? - How much is opium for the people?
Святое дело! Батистовые портянки будем носить, крем Марго кушать. - It's a sacred cause! We'll be wearing cambric footcloths and eating Margo cream.
Будем работать по-марксистски. Предоставим небо птицам, а сами обратимся к
стульям. - Let's work the Marxist way. We'll leave the sky to the birds and deal with the  chairs ourselves.
После сегодняшнего свидания министров на яхте - никакое сближение невозможно. - After  today's meeting of the  foreign  ministers aboard  the yacht no
rapprochement is possible.
Не волнуйтесь, председатель, беру операцию на себя. - Don't  worry,  Judge, I'll take on the operation myself.
Перед этими ботиночками ни один стул не устоит. - No chair can withstand these shoes.
Для предводителя дворянства у вас слишком мелкие масштабы. - For a marshal of the nobility  your methods are  too crude.
Может быть, у вас в чемодане запрятан походный несессер с набором отмычек? - Maybe you  have  a  travelling  kit with a  set of skeleton keys.
Это типичное пижонство, грабить бедную вдову. - It's a  scummy  trick  to rob  a  poor widow.
Скоро только кошки родятся. - Only  cats  are  born quickly.
- Я женюсь на ней.
- Зачем же?
- Чтобы спокойно, без шума, покопаться в стуле.
[- I'll marry her.
- Why?
- So that we can rummage inside the chair quietly and without any fuss.]
Чего не сделаешь для блага концессии! - The things we do for the concession!
Жена? Прощальная слеза и цыпленок на дорогу. Поедем с комфортом. - Wife? A wet-eyed farewell and  a  roast chicken for the  journey. We'll travel in comfort.


Глава 13. Дышите глубже, вы взволнованы! - Сhapter Thirteen. Breathe deeper: you're excited!

Грузовик, одетый новеньким зеленым паровозом серии «Щ». - A  lorry disguised as a green plywood locomotive with the serial letter "S" [Shch].
Буржуй! Отдай подтяжки! - Bourgeois ! Give back those braces!
Будем выписывать ешаков или трамвай построим? – Shall we send for donkeys or build a tramway?
Трамвай не ешак - его за трешку не купишь.- A tramline is not like a donkey - it can't  be bought for three  roubles.
Трамвай построить - не ешака купить. - Building a tramway is not like buying a donkey.
Шумные аплодисменты, переходящие в овацию. - Loud applause turning into an ovation.


Глава 14. Союз меча и орала. - Chapter Fourteen. The Alliance of the Sword and Ploughshare

Кажется, наступил психологический момент для ужина. - The psychological moment for supper seems to have arrived.
Старуха не подкачает? - The old woman is reliable, isn't she?
- Ваше политическое кредо?
- Всегда!
- Вы, надеюсь, кирилловец?
- Так точно.
- Россия Вас не забудет!
[- What's your political credo?
- Always!
- You support Prince Kirill, I hope?
- Yes, indeed.

Это - гигант мысли, отец русской демократии и особа, приближенная к императору. - He's the master-mind, the father of Russian democracy and a person  close to the emperor.

При наличии отсутствия… - Given the absence…

Нас никто не любит, если не считать уголовного розыска, который тоже нас не любит. - No one likes us, except for the criminal investigation department, which doesn't  like us, either.
