My native land, lost in the boundless steppe,
Among the gullies, ravines, and ponds…
My childhood home, with a cherry tree by the doorstep,
Caressed by winds from every side.

The street that once seemed like the whole wide world,
Where all my childhood years flew by,
Led me along its winding, secret pattern
To every house where friends awaited me.

Everything there was close and familiar;
I knew each person and always said hello.
I had no need for towering skyscrapers
Or vast and dusty cities far away.

Enraptured by the open countryside,
I fell in love with all your beauty.
I wandered through the fields and down the hillsides,
Intoxicated by the air of freedom.

I marvelled at the drifting poplar down,
The grace of golden acacia trees,
The fragrance of the apple trees in blossom,
And watermelons ripening in the fields.

At dawn, beneath the morning’s earliest rays,
I watched the nimble crucian carp with joy.
I secretly went swimming in the pond,
Without permission, naked and carefree.

Each morning I awoke, as always,
To the deep and rumbling roar of tractors,
The proud and piercing cries of roosters,
And cows lowing softly in the barn.

I heard the coal crackling in the stove,
Its warmth spreading throughout our home.
I was happy living in my native land,
Within my father’s sturdy, cherished house.

I understood the hardships of village life;
I worked myself, in silence, without complaint.
Exhausted by the endless flood of sunlight,
I prayed to God and begged Him for the rain.

In my village I learned so many things
And thanked so many people for their guidance.
At ten, I learned to drive a tractor;
By fifteen, I had mastered a combine.

But that is life—our childhood always passes,
And everyone must choose a road to follow.
It has been thirty years since I left home
To face the winding paths of adult life.

I bowed before my childhood doorstep,
Embraced my mother, gazed across the steppe,
Then set out down an unknown road,
While the clear trail of childhood disappeared.

My native land, I seldom see you now,
And scarcely recognize the people anymore.
Only in the graveyard do I find
More faces of those once closest and most dear.

The gullies all have overgrown with grass;
The steppes and houses now stand empty.
And dust has covered up the road
That led me far away from home.
