Никак

Когда я говорю «Никак»
Но это все ж случается,
Андрей мне отвечает «Как!»
А «ни» им  исключается.
«Никак» я с детства понимал,
Но объяснения не знал.
Откуда слово появилось
И как оно укоренилось.


А может прав мой внук Андрей
И говорить «Как» все ж верней.
В России на слуху ведь «Как» :
Как это сделать?, Как сказать?
Значит без «ни» мы скажем «Как»,
Когда сперва не получается
И лишь потом все же случается.



When I would say, “No way, no how,”
Yet still it would unfold somehow,
Young Andrew answers with a “How!”—
He drops the “no” and shows me how.
Since childhood, “no way” made much sense,
Though why it did—I’d sit, perplexed.
Where did that word come from, I’d ponder,
And how did it take root and wander?
But maybe Andrew’s view is right,
To answer “How!” with clear insight.
In Russia, “How?” is on the air—
How do you do it? Say it where?
So “How” might suit us best, in fact,
When first it fails, but then—impact!
It works, it happens, after all…
So maybe “How!” is best to call
