Закат в пять часов над прерией это крепкий мужчина, которого смаривает сон после длинного дня в кукурузных полях.

Ржаво-малиновая пыль, ярче на фоне двух пальцев лаванды. Крюк дыма - как линия женского носа углем и... всё.

Черта деревьев становится почти фиолетовой.  Зерновой элеватор приподнял плечо.  Одна ярко-голубая звезда взбивает точечное пламя.  Лунный-свет ложится на стерню.

«Иисус в хлеву, в Иллинойсе, этим раним утром… дитё Иисус... в мягкой фланели...»

8. Rusty Crimson

(Christmas Day, 1917)

THE FIVE O’CLOCK prairie sunset is a strong man going to sleep after a long day in a cornfield.

The red dust of a rusty crimson is fixed with two fingers of lavender. A hook of smoke, a woman’s nose in charcoal and … nothing.

The timberline* turns in a cover of purple. A grain elevator humps a shoulder. One steel star whisks out a pointed fire. Moonlight comes on the stubble.

“Jesus in an Illinois barn early this morning, the baby Jesus … in flannels …”

Translator comments:

* timberline: the elevation line above which the trees are not growing and the landscape changes to grass and flowers.  Sandburg uses it as line where the prairie starts and trees mostly disappears.  This word became part of the language at the end of 19th century.
