98. Transiency and Eternity
I gaze at the full moon,
Its light is so bright.
The distant stars glimmering,
Beautiful is the night.
But one thought does not leave me,
Comes again and again,
That we’re all temporary,
And our lives have no aims.
The sun in the blue sky,
It illumines the bay,
Mew-gulls hovering over,
It’s a marvelous day.
But why am I so sad?
What is gnawing my heart?
I know this all will vanish,
And it gives me a start.
Yes, eternal is nothing,
All things come to an end,
Seas and oceans will dry out,
Mountains will turn to sand.
It is sad but it is true,
And of sense it’s not void,
For two things — time and space —
Will be never destroyed.
