Once Upon a Star

A star is dying, its former glory morphed
From a red giant to a measly dwarf.
For eons it doused its siblings in reddish light,
Their orbits sculpted by its gargantuan might.
All that came near it soaked up its warmth
Basking in seemingly unbounded wealth.

Now star's collapsed – can't bear its own weight,
The crushing pressure seals its vicious fate.

More eons pass – the star is a black hole
Bereft of giving, it has a different role –
A cosmic burglar, darkness its disguise
E'en light, when ambushed, can't escape its ties.
Each thing that nears its consuming orbit
It strips of everything, preparing to absorb it.

When stream of bounty is a one-way street,
It is inevitable that the scales are tipped.
