Admiration

How the mighty have fallen...
Yesterday's celebrities – deconstructed and sullen.
Their glamorous finish peeling off like old paint,
Revealing the rust and the rot and the taint.

Is there anyone left for me to admire,
Whose name has survived being dragged through the mire?
It seems we have all succumbed to Zeitgeist,
For crude mess of pottage our birthright sacrificed.

Yet when the night's darkest and times are forlorn,
Like phoenix from ashes, humankind is re-born,
Amidst a calamity – compassionate ways.
By everyday folks. Them  –  admire and praise.
