Temptations of Jesus

The Spirit led You to the place,
where tested You for forty days.
Then Satan met You face to face,
and You have seen his eyes' glaze.

You were submitted to temptations,
and yet, resisting Satan's lure,
in barren desert isolation,
You have succeeded to endure.

When hungry, thirsty, daily craving,
in cold nights, all alone.
You persevered not to cave in,
You didn't grumble, didn't moan.

For his seduction Satan uses
the weakest moments to attack.
Of crafty skills and subtle ruses,
of cunning schemes he has no lack.

You could have turned to bread a stone
by picking it from desert's dust.
"Man cannot live on bread alone,
but on the Word of God he must."

You didn't venture in debates,
accusing him, who stole the world,
but, taking none of Satan's baits,
You answered with the Father's Word.

Exhausted, yet, You stood the ground.
The enemy of humankind
had no weakness in You found,
when all his offers were declined.

No flights with angels he suggested,
no kingdoms of the world and power
attracted You, when You were tested
at such a vulnerable hour.

I look at You in Your temptations,
how You have stood, in Spirit pure.
Oh, give me, Lord, Your strength and patience,
and victory in tests assure.
