A Refugee Tale

Oh, hundreds of miles so far have been passed on the road
With many more that are still waiting for our weary feet
To be walked and sailed or run and crawled and tiptoed
‘Til I can say happily that our journey’s complete

Our country’s forgotten, broken and being torn apart
There wasn’t a shelter for us anywhere anymore
So me and my wife with two children decided to start
All over again in the place far away from that gore

The trek was a hard one and we could not be well prepared
Of those who had gone just like us we heard many a tale
To challenge their spirits and strength in the greatest despair
They all hit the road and they all were bound to fail

At noon we would suffer from heat and at night we would freezе
For weeks we were without a shower, dressed in dirty clothes
With canned food and water I dreamt of tomatoes and cheese
Another day passed and at sunrise we’re ready to go

We met a young boy who had blisters on both of his hands
We met a young girl who had wisdom of ten thousand men
They joined us on our way through the mountains and sands
To part and to never run into each other again

When crossing the desert my wife went down with a disease
The fever was so high that I could not touch her forehead
Whatever I tried was in vain as the pain wouldn’t ease
The morning next day in the nullah we buried her dead

I wonder if there’s any God somewhere high in the clouds?
Does he know about us and if so, does he even care?
Did he hear a child and its mother both screaming so loud?
Did he hear the gunshots and silence hang in the air?

I don’t know if we ever manage to come to the end
So much has been lost and so little is now left to lose
But I still have someone to care for and to defend
And we will go further as there isn’t much else to choose

They found us at midnight, they all were heavily armed
I woke up my kids, gave them kisses and told them to run
Then went outside crying “I beg you, don’t do us no harm”
They looked and they laughed very hard before firing their guns

I hope that you both have survived and got out of this hell
I wish I had given you everything I had to give
And you won’t be scared of such things as a ringing doorbell
For I am long dead, but you, my loved ones, must live
