We Shall Meet the New Day with Prayer
Dedicated to My Mother
I
The Muse departs, the lyre is crying—
Whom shall we blame, whom shall forgive,
When from this sunlit world of ours
A woman and a mother leave?
When, with a weary soul and grieving,
You gaze upon the fields below,
And call upon the Lord in prayer,
That gentle earth may hold her close.
She walked a path both harsh and noble,
Selfless, steadfast, pure, and true.
What thought, what word could ever honor
A mother such as she was to you?
The snows will melt, the storms will thunder,
And you, an angel here on earth,
Will rise to meet your Lord in heaven,
While we, through tears, say our farewell.
II
To sing your image, pure and heavenly,
In righteous verses, bright and true—
For my one mother, my beloved,
I am not ready, not yet ready to.
The soul cannot embrace such sorrow;
Grief has so few words to say.
To praise the woman and the mother—
I am not ready, not today.
Not to stop loving, not forgetting
You, who have entered dreams' domain;
To mourn, to grieve, and still keep living—
I am not ready, not again.
III
Leaving behind your earthly body,
In peaceful sleep, without a sound,
Your soul rose gently toward the angels,
Set free from all that held it down.
It sought the healing it had longed for,
Beyond all sorrow, dreams, and fears;
And one brief moment became eternal
Above life's restless sea of years.
And I, with sadness in my heart,
Sing now a hymn of love to you—
For all the endless care you gave me,
For tenderness forever true.
IV
I look upon your dear beloved face—
You have not left, you only sleep.
A quiet peace has spread upon it,
Your soul has flown beyond our reach.
How little I gave you in return,
How few were those desired hours together.
What friend I lost, what love I buried,
What treasure I shall miss forever.
A monument of stone now stands
Beside the resting place where you lie,
Yet still I hear your voice around me,
With strength that seems to come from sky.
“Do not weep, my son, do not suffer;
Those who live are often unaware.
Only the soul that enters eternity
Will find its path to gardens fair.”
V
A yellow candle softly burned
Within a crimson-colored stand.
In quiet conversation with a world
Beyond our sight, beyond our hands,
The trembling flame was small and shy,
Yet in its sacred, gentle glow,
The distances between all ages
Moved together, flowing slow.
Love, hopes, and sorrows of the centuries
Were gathered in a single breath;
The endless stories of the ages
Were joined within one moment's depth.
The days of Shiva pass like shadows,
The Kaddish rises in the prayer.
We too shall walk the roads before us,
With thoughts of God and goodness there.
And with a prayer upon our lips,
We shall greet the coming day—
With faith that love survives forever,
And souls will never fade away.
The First Week (Shiva)
The first week after the funeral is called Shiva. It is a period of deep mourning. During this week, the mourners (avelim) usually remain in the home of one of the family members and do not leave except when absolutely necessary. Three times a day, friends and members of their community come to pray together with those who are in mourning. During these prayers, the men who are mourning recite the Kaddish. The Kaddish is often mistakenly considered a prayer for the deceased. In fact, it is a declaration of the greatness of God and a prayer for the coming of an era of universal peace.
On all days of Shiva, except Shabbat, when mourning practices are suspended, the mourners sit on low stools. They are not permitted to cut their hair or nails; however, if a person observing mourning is ill and this restriction causes difficulty, the prohibition may be lifted. All mirrors in the house are covered so that the mourners will not be distracted by their own reflection. Marital relations are forbidden during this period. Those in mourning do not listen to music and do not wear leather shoes. A candle burns day and night. This recalls the words from the Book of Proverbs: “The soul of man is the candle of the Lord.”
Throughout this week, friends come to visit those in mourning, to speak with them and offer their condolences. Guests are not served food, as it is considered inappropriate to take anything from a mourner, even food. At the end of the week, the mourners leave the house and gradually return to their ordinary activities.
The Kaddish
The Kaddish is one of the most famous Jewish prayers. Written in Aramaic (the spoken language of the Talmudic era), the Kaddish is recited in the presence of at least ten Jewish worshippers (a minyan). The Kaddish is a prayer that praises the Almighty and acknowledges the righteousness of His deeds.
