The Narrow Way

                Enter through the narrow gate.
For wide is the gate and broad
is the road that leads to destruction,
                and many enter through it.
                But small is the gate
and narrow the road that leads to life,
and only a few find it.
                Mathew 7:13-14

I would have probably preferred
the way, by sun and pleasures lit,
but You have chosen, my Lord,
the way, demanding to submit.

Not broad highways - a narrow way.
The way of faith, hope, and trust,
and no wandering away.
To follow Your way, I must.

My sinful nature wants to stop,
my curious nature asks to test
the other roads and to swap
for other things my inner quest.

But this I know deep inside
that what’s beyond what You have set
for me, the roads smooth and wide,
could bring me to a Satan’s net.

Your way sometimes is austere
and difficult, and it may cost.
You asked me to resist the fear
to trip on stones or be lost.

On foggy days, You seem to vanish,
the path is winding and steep,
I feel abandoned in my anguish,
but, glimpsing You, from joy I leap!

You’ll never leave me on my own,
I'm learning more and more to trust
and to endure, never moan,
when stricken by a windy gust.

Oh yes, sometimes it’s not easy,-
I'm seeking your unknown land,
but pure is the air breezy,
and what a joy to hold Your hand!
