On speaking skills

Talking about speaking skills, when you learn a foreign language, they are obviously the hardest problem for nearly every student and can sometimes be a source of contention between different types of teachers.

Why is it so hard to reproduce the language that you have been learning for several months or even years? Students might know grammar quite well, and they might be good at listening and reading, but they still might not be so successful when it comes to their speaking skills. Let us take a look at why that is…

In every language there are four main skills: speaking, reading, writing and listening. If somebody tells you that one of these skills is more important than the others, I recommend you don’t trust them.

Nowadays, many students would like to have perfect speaking skills without thinking about the correct way to reach this wonderful, but nonessential goal. When I say that speaking skills are not the most important, I mean that speaking skills are equally as important as the other language skills. For instance, will you be a successful communicator if you don’t know grammar or your vocabulary is at a low level? I think the answer has to be “no”.

A balanced knowledge of the foreign language could give students better opportunities in the modern world for improving their lives, careers and maybe general success. None of these four basic language skills should be ignored because they are parts of your knowledge of the foreign language. If you miss one, how can you have balanced language skills?

Skipping stages in this process is not a good idea. Every flower starts growing from a small seed, and it needs water, sun and soil to survive. How will the flower grow if it doesn’t have enough water?
