The scarecrow in the field

Look at this scarecrow in the field
erected to catch insolent crows;
he was dug mistakenly with a tilt,
and, year from year, falls down slow,
but knows his duties he so well
though all of him is fill with straws,
pretending to be just a swell
for these damned noisy crows.

But, well encircled with corn stalks,
that take him for a pity humbled,
that couldn't swing, and rustle, and talk,
or like a little thunder, rumble;
with their wind-tossed yellow heads
they only nod to strong wind blowing
but argue for what's good or bad,
and argue more as soon as growing.

This scarecrow stands on the watch
and vigilant beyond fields' prairies,
appreciated at the highest notch
by masters of the corn stalks values.
You want to see him?- Go, and look,
he's at the same place now standing,
except, his head a little crooked,
and dress a new one humbly pending.
