SONG ABOUT A FRIEND


If a friend failed to some extent
to make feel he's a friend for real,
if you call him a friend because
he's not one of your foes...
Find some mountains and time to climb.
Do not leave him alone, move on –
sharing ropes on the same steep slopes,
see if he's worth your hopes.

If there's not much of zeal uphill,
if no step went without lament,
if each crack on the glacier track
ran cold sweat down his back...

Then, before there's indeed a need,
it's a right place to part your ways,
up there one doesn't walk with such folk.
That's the end of the talk.

But if he, looking spent and bent,
did not wail, did not yelp for help,
if his hands still recall the wall
where he first held your fall...
If he stood next to you, oh boy,
on the summit half-drunk with joy –
then few things down the earth's far rim
you could trust more than him.
