I was gathering pearly words-beads

I was gathering pearly words-beads,
That were scattered like autumn leaves,
I rolled-up higher my sleeves,
And wend down low on my knees.

I wanted to make such a pattern
To be intricate and plain,
But it was a subtle matter,
As poetry’s a rough terrain.

I put them on a clear sheet of paper,
Solving a crossword with an apparent strain;
Believing that my calling could be fateful;
And an incurable poet isn’t vain.
