Homage to Camoens 17

I want you to be a stone so that I could throw you
into the deepest river ceaselessly flowing away.
I want you to be a bird so that I could release you
into the highest sky swelling with fire in the night.

I want you to be a coin so that I could give you
to the first passer-by and never see him again.
I want you to be a door so that I could lock you
and never know what is hidden behind it.

Although you are none of these things, I keep
throwing you away, releasing, giving and locking you,
because my love for you is too immediate to bear.

Only if I did not love you could I love you,
only if I completely lost you could I find you,
but you are too close to me, too me to be mine.
