The Butterfly

Oh thou, ethereal creature winged!
Thou art with Wind e'er blowing ringed.
By thee inspired and filled with glee,
My spirit wants to fly like thee.

From flo'er to flo'er, by sunshine kissed,
On thy wings flower-like thou flit'st:
Thou wert a caterpillar once -
And now I watch thy airy dance...

Day after day thou struggled through -
A tiny thing, yet fighter true -
In weather fine and in the rain -
And no one knew thy inner pain...

A dainty creature, full of strength -
Thou art at liberty at length!
Bride of the Wind, divine and smart -
A real miracle thou art!

And we who spend our days in dust
Like blind and dirty worms... - we must
Just look at thee - and we shall see
What our real life could be!..
