Будь я царем – так чувства подчинял бы

Будь я царем – так чувства подчинял бы;
Будь победней – то жил бы без затей,
А будь я мертв – то тяжких дум не знал бы,
Ошибок, грез, терзаний иль страстей.
Чего желать? Ведь выбор так непрост:
Престол, крестьянский домик, иль погост.


Филип Сидни ответил де Веру:

Будь ты царем – сердца не подчинял бы:
Любое царство малым предстает;
Будь бедным – все же горести знавал бы,
Но, коль ты мертв, с тобой и скорбь умрет.
Чего желать? Здесь выбор очень прост:
То не престол, не домик – а погост.
