Задумчива, печальна и... счастлива! –
загадочный и дивный парадокс
души простой, не гордой, не спесивой,
минувшей свой убийственный откос.
Под градом злых ругательств и проклятий,
но под покровом вечных горних сил –
чтоб тьмами тем хазарских ратей
мир ополчившийся тебя не подкосил,
Россия, ты спасаешься любовью –
родной душе как это не понять?
Склонится Дева тихо к изголовью
последний выдох воина принять...

Declaration of Love

Thoughtful, elegiac but... happy! –
a mysterious and remarkable antinomy
of an artless soul, free from arrogance or vainglory,
that’s just escaped its murderous slope.
Under a hail of abuse and black curses,
but under the holy protection of the eternal heavenly Powers –
so that the Khazar host, tens of thousands of  men strong,
turned against you by the great of the world, wouldn’t lay you down,
Russia, you’re forsaken by love –
a kindred spirit can’t but be aware of that.
The Holy Virgin will gently bend over the bed-head
to receive the warrior’s last breath...
