I could not pass the Army tests,
And so escaped the war.

Then I took my place with the ten million Americans
Who never learn to write an intelligent letter;
And the fifty million
Who do not comprehend free government,
And the half of the State legislators
Who never get beyond the grammar school.

Who will save this people from themselves,
Seeing that they have ears and hear not,
And eyes and see not?
