                Дети на школьном дворе
                Об этом болтают и досаждают этим друг другу.
                Некую девочку или мальчика ежедневно мучают этим,
                Пальцем тыча на это, его порицая и над этим хихикая.
                И это длится всё время, до самой кончины.
                Известно, что нет ничего иного,
                Что могло бы так ранить,
                Смутить, как разговоры об этом.
                Женщины это дают и потом подвергаются осмеянию
                Теми, кто получил это.
                И к ним подтягивается весь город, вызывая смущенье и плач.
                Платят деньги, чтоб об этом молчали;
                Из-за этого дерутся и убивают;
                Из-за этого завещания пишут и их аннулируют;
                Пожимают плечами, смеются, обвинения из-за этого выдвигают.
                Репутации, состояния разбиваются в прах из-за этого.
                Из-за этого половина напастей на свете.
                Что же это, если оно порождает
                Стыд, страх, преступление, гибель и муки
                Повсюду в Америке?

Children commence on the schoolyard

To talk and torment each other about that.

Some little girl or little boy is driven to daily torture

For fingers pointed and accusing giggles about that.

It is always that to the day of one's death.

It is known that nothing can be told about another

That will hurt and tangle like telling about that.

Women give that and then are mocked by the one to whom

they give it,
And the whole town takes up the hue and cry.
Money is given to hush the talk about that;
Fights and murders are about that;
Wills are made and revoked because of that;
Shrugs, laughs, accusations are about that.
Reputations, fortunes, go to pieces because of that,
And one half of the woe of the world is about that.
What is that, that it should produce
Shame, terror, crime, ruin and crucifixion
All over America?
