A Midnight Pondering...

I cannot say the magic words “I  love you” –
Against the rules, morality, your law…
So I’ll invent philosophies and lore
To reach your soul, admire and implore,
My poet’s tongue knows not the word “Adieu.”

I shall not say the simple words “I love you” –
I’ll simply mean them: every sound and word,
They’ll penetrate the air – read and heard,
They’ll span the Earth, for many – a reward,
But will you hear these honest words above you?

“I love you” – I could say (but won’t) with ease;
Your ear and mind are closed to their magic…
So let it be: I’ll write, create, imagine;
You’ll feel them in the air, let me wager,
They’ll reach the stars and bounce on your knees.

“I love you” are the words you wish to ban,
Your wish is granted, they are barred from English;
But I will speak the truth in French and Finnish,
Italian, Martian – never, ever finish…
They’ll reach you through artistic, mental bands…

“I love you” – let’s abolish this rendition,
But magic spells, once born, cannot be stopped…
Your eyes, my verse, my eyes, your voice, its tone –
A formula that pierces walls of stone,
Or cold air – any definition.

Oh, please don’t say these tender words “I love you” -
Too burdensome, too cumbersome and hard…
Let’s not admire, create – with sparks and art,
Let’s vote for blood, not passion in the heart,
Let’s place these words of magic under curfew.

What can I do if ocean and desert,
If past and future breathe these clever words?
If looking in your eyes – my best award?
If smiles of yours ignite the whole world?
If to be spoken and heard these words are destined…?

“I love you” – I shall never speak this line…
And break this word a million times a minute;
One day you’ll say them too – the world will mimic,
“I love you” - words of poetry and miracles,
I promise not to say them! - What a lie…
