MODERN   EUROPEAN   BOOKPLATE

( A   summary  of  the   Gennady     Snegin)


   The end   of  the 90-th  years  in twentieth  century – beginning  twentieth one century is  a start of a new of  Russians   bookplate  and  in  history of European  bookplate.  This  period in modern history  of  ex-libris  development is expressed  most of all in creative  works of Russian’s  artists.
    Un  like  traditional bookplate,   a  modern  ex-libris  is  exist  as  a  peculiar  field  of  graphic  art,  which  more  than  other  genres is  subjected  by influences  of  epoch  and variety of  art styles   and innovations.
    It  is lead to increase  a  self-value  of ex-libris, as well  as  a role  of  its  creator.  Today artist  is  not  anonym,  not only  a  performer,  but  a  person, expressing  his  credo,  his  minds, his perception  of surrounding  world.
   These  searches  of  self-expression  is  one  of  the reasons  for growth  of  interests  to  color  &  author’s  (manual works – exquisite) painting  bookplates  of  21 century.  The  stagnation in  social &  cultural  life  in Russia  in 90-th years in twentieth century, bureaucrat’s  practices   in  art spheres, has been  lead a young  in ordinary  and thinking artists into  official – free  fields  of  art  for  independence  creation. One  of  these fields  was represented  by  small  graphic  forms  and  ex-libris,  mainly.  In  real  time,  in  East-Europe  &  Russia  the  new  generations  of  talented  artists  was  appeared  -  Sense 1980  up to  2007 years. 
    Veniamin  V.  KHUDOLEY  -  known  collector of  modern  bookplate &  General  editor of magazine “Russian  Ex-libris Journal” (Moscow)  was  a  President  of  Saint – Petersburg’s  Club  of  exlibrists.
    A  numerous  bookplates  exhibitors, representing  a  new  names  from  modern  West &  East  European  artists – venerable  designers  in  ex-libris, were organized  by  him.  The  activity  of  Club  of  exlibrists  in  Moscow  &  St – Petersburg, Odessa & Harkov (Ukraine),  Pr aha,  Warszawa  etc.  was an important influence upon  artists.  Vlad  Mitin -  artist & collector  from  Kislowodsk  also  were  organized  any  exhibitions  of  ex-libris  in  South  Russia  since  1995   up  to  2006 years.
    In  this  period  the  first  bookplates were  created  by  A. Gennadiev, S. Parfenov,  I. Zemtsov,  E. Blum,  V. Orlov,   M. Verholantsev,  Aine Karlsone, I. Zeliostov,  V. Kiselev, V.  Mishin,  V.  Kortowicz, E. Martishev  etc.
    All  of  them  are  very famous  in  world &  West  Europe  as  a  masters  of  applied  art,  painting, sculpture, book – illustration, etc.
   Today the  centre  of  European  ex- libris  is extremely  popular  in  Russia -  St. Petersburg,   Moscow  and  Vologda.
   Some  creators  of  bookplates, especially  A. Kalashnikov, J. Ljukshin,   Vlad  Vereschagin, Boris Zabirokhin,  A. Dmitriewsky,  Oleg  Yahnin,  J. Nozdrin,  A. Zuew  etc.
    Others  are  laureates  of prestige  ex-libris  competitions -  Nina  Kazimova,  Elena  Kiseleva, Jury Shapakov,  J. Borovitzky, Ivan  Zeliostov,  or who  has  prize’s      of  book-illustrations  or  graphic  art  competitions  -  Nik  Domashenko, A.  Durandin,  Vlad Alexeew,  Elena  Novikova, Victor  Guzenjuk,  V. Kwartalnij,  G. Viall,  L. Alimov,  J. Konnow,  S. Harlamov  etc.
     Quite  new  names  in  bookplates  Center  Club  of  Moscow – St. Petersburg – N. Tagil (Ural) & Belarus  Republic  -  N. Riziy, O. Krupenkova,  S. Wandesheva,  S. Bakshaeva, O. Listov, D. Saenko, V. Budko  etc.
    This  is  “ New  Wave”  of  21  century  in  the  color  art  bookplates  of  Europe.

    Are  different  inventive  individualists,  with  various  visions  of  surroundings  world  and  it’s  realities,  and   diverse  technical  peculiarities.  In  present  paper  the  creation  of  East’s  Europe  artists  in  this  unique  techniques,  as well  as  the  tendencies  in  European’s   ex-libris  development  are  characterized.
    This  topic  as  “ Culture &  Religion  of  Europe  in  Ex- libris”  have  many  interesting  pages  of  history  and  theory  of   color  bookplates .
