I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Couldn’t follow it in its flight,
I breathed the song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where:
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of a song?
Long, long afterwards, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroken:
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.
Стрела и песня
Однажды лук я натянул –
Умчалась вдаль стрела.
Вслед посмотрел ей и вздохнул:
Не знаю, где она.
Слетела песня с моих губ,
Растаяв в тишине,
За нею зоркий взгляд не смог
Угнаться в вышине.
Промчались годы, и стрелу
Нашел я в кроне дуба,
А песню нежную мою
Услышал я от друга.
