High on a hill

High on a hill, on a porcelain deck
a black man named White and a white man named Black
work through the moves of a merry old game
night after night, yet it ends just the same.
Marshmallow clouds and chocolate smoke
float to the background, dissolve in the dark,
as with their beads they redraw every move,
tortured by hunger, and fear, and love.
