Ted Hughes. Crowquill
Where there is nothing
The crow's feather falls spinning
A hoar-frost of sun and bristling
Galactic encrustations
Whiten along its edges
Still the feather falls
And winds stir over it, a
Breeding of space bacteria
Rejoicing and multiplying
Still the crowfeather goes on falling
Mountains rib and hump and
Lift heads and stare out
From the dorsal spine itself
And still the feather falls
Rivers peer from its scales and
Creep to seas
And the rain prospers
And that feather goes on falling
And the five coloured leopard
Drops from a tree near the river
A toad splits out of a pebble
The feather is still falling
While rhinos erupt from brambles
And the butterfly eddies in
And the mouse sits up, amazed by its place
The feather is falling and falling
And people clasp each other close
With their froglike hands, inside houses
And look out of the windows at
The emptiness through which the feather falls
Like a wand
That has swallowed its wizard.
