Autumn’s Golden Flame
The words have faded, like summer’s last light,
That graced Canadian days with its splendour;
The leaves turn to gold as autumn draws nigh,
And the hush of the season grows tender.
The pale silver mist melts away from the ground,
And a flock of wild geese crosses the blue;
Their voices grow faint as they journey eastward,
While the skies stretch above, endless and true.
The rowan’s ripe clusters blaze crimson and gold,
Like embers that glow in the cool autumn air.
We stand here together, enchanted, enthralled,
By the beauty of all that surrounds us there.
Grey clouds drift like shadows across the bright vale,
While the river flashes, so sparkling and clear;
And the world seems to pause in this magical moment,
As if all its wonders were gathered us near.
I drink love’s sweet elixir from your lips,
So crimson, so tender, so thrillingly near;
And a beautiful world opens up to my soul,
Its wonders more vivid, its colours more clear.
Only autumn could bring us to such a beginning,
Only autumn could kindle this golden embrace;
And it lights up a fire for the two of us, burning,
A golden flame time itself cannot erase.
