I see it very clearly now,
the spectre waiting at my threshold:
an enticement, invitation,
lingering temptation.
'If you'll come away with me
I swear this agony shall cease.
Let me take you
where the shade is deeper
than all earthly sleep.
I am the dark shepherd,
come to gather up
my little sheep
away, away, away from here
where you shall cease to weep.'
In the struggle to resist
his blandishments
lies half the pain.
