Muscle in on those verbs, girls,
wrestle them to the ground;
lasso them if they try to bolt,
don't let the brutes escape!
Manoeuvre them deftly into position,
jockeying for the lead with nouns;
I'll put my money on ergatives
to take line honours any day.
Adjectives can simper; adverbs
seem evasive, verbose, graceless.
Give me a brace of serviceable
Anglo-Saxon cues to action,
down-to-earth, no-nonsense words
like strut and dote, and strike and lope;
ransack the English tongue for Nordic
origins and flex those verbs!
