Oak trees and ancient amphitheatre
Defining archetypes of play and stage
the stone-hewn tiers embrace
the hollow dustbowl of cavea,
sounding-board of yesteryear.
Unnaturally silent as an instrument
no longer played, the theatre reinvents
itself in other, unobtrusive ways. Standing in the wings
the cast awaits its cue, performs impromptu.
Bending to the baton of the breeze
they move as dancers do,
trees improvising distant thunder,
water sources, fire’s terse voices.
Dust devises dervish spirals
then subsides, air's marionette.
Limbs sketch a bow, leaves simulate
the muffled roar of hands, applauding.
