On the pontoon

Two people wait
for different ferries,
silent
on the dim pontoon.

They are strangers -
he from Asia,
finishing
his first degree;
she a teacher,
homeward bound
after evening
work in town.

She stands
almost at journey's end,
approaching Charon's
narrow gangway,
shadowy,
extending back
to mangroves'
obscure origins.

The swaying footbridge
lies before him;
lanterns on the other shore
wink and beckon,
hint at more
bounties life
may hold in store…
