A Question for Hamlet

                Life
                has turned
                so painfully raw and blinding.
                Only fleeting grimaces
                and painkillers break the flow.
                Caught inside a vise:
                it twists,
                it burns,
                it grinds me,
                Etching deeper furrows
where the years have left their mark below.

                It gnaws with something grey,
                hysterical,
                and blurred,
                A worn-out script,
                read through till every page
                is frayed.
                It warms the soul
like an electric chair — absurd,
                The day the curtain falls:
                a charming keepsake,
                neatly laid.

                A foolish thought —
                have I been spoiled rotten?
                It buzzes
                like a trapped fly
                battering the pane.
                And hope,
it seems, has turned a widow,
                long forgotten,
                Beating her head
                against closed doors
                again and yet again.

                A nameless melancholy
                floods this ageing frame;
                No work,
                no warmth,
                no tenderness
                can make the ache depart.
                I turn to Hamlet,
                as an equal,
                calling him by name:
                If being is the answer,
how do I face tomorrow all the same?

Rock Bottom

                I.   When cats claw at your soul,
And chills come crawling through your skin,
And happiness seems beyond your reach,
No matter how hard you dig in —

There's one thing left to remember
When life's got you down on your luck:
Tell the whole world to go fuck itself,
And stop giving a flying fuck.

II.  When cats claw at your soul,
And shivers run wild down your spine,
And happiness seems like a goal
You'll never quite manage to find —

                You'll know it's a hopeless endeavour,
Till one day you look up and say:
"To hell with the world — now and forever!"
And stop giving a fuck either way.

мир
зол
и
но ...
добр,
красив,

The world is malicious, ugly, and wrong,
Yet beautiful, kind, and worthy of song.

XАНДРА

какая
пора!
нависли
облака.

редки.
старики.
и жду

                The Sickening Season

                I.  A sickening season
                has taken its hold,
                The soul turns away
from the gloom and the cold.
                Like a boundless sea,
                the river runs wide,
                While leaden clouds
                weigh down the sky.

                Smiles have grown scarce
                in the streets below,
                And old men speak
                of the long ago.
                I press my cheek
                to the misted pane,
                And dream of the sun
                and the spring again.

II. What a sickening, wretched time of year.
A dreary gloom has swallowed up all cheer.
The swollen river spills into a shoreless sea,
While leaden clouds press down relentlessly.

Smiles are as scarce as sunshine in the sky,
I press my cheek against the misted pane,
While old men speak of days long since gone by,
And wait for spring and sun to shine again.

Beware the Pike!

Life holds a place for sorrow and for glee,
So never dance to someone else’s tune.
                Don't trust a pike that's thrashing in a pail—
She'll play you for a fool, and very soon.
