Team spirit

Sounding querulous at first,
their cries are heard before I see
the flock of white corellas
and the tulip tree.

Approaching, I detect the dulcet
undertones, approving notes,
observe them clustered on the ground,
fielding blossoms floating down
like parachutes, vermilion glands
secreting nectar's golden dew,
while team-mates placed strategically
ply their hooked, incisive beaks
to sever petalled chalices,
canoe-shaped pods of seeds.

Watching them and watching me
absorbed in choreography
of gaudy tulips plundered systematically,
symbiotic moments/ movements
synchronising birds and tree -
a team sporting striped zebra-jerseys:
rugby players from Fiji.

Corellas resemble large white parrots
or galahs, or cockatoos without crests.
