Cats breath
click of the latch
to surge outside,
and explore lank grasses
tawny in sunrise,
harbouring traces of nocturnal life,
and paw at the leaves
that part from the elms
with an audible pang
that sounds like regret -
disturbing somnolent
lizards and beetles,
exchanging baleful
glances with crows -
and bask with fur gleaming
like stainless steel needles
where autumn's cold front
is rebuffed by warm light.
