I took a breath...
‘She felt the heat of the night/
hit her/
like a freight train/
moving with the simple twist of fate’
Bob Dylan, ‘Simple twist of fate’, variation from ‘Concert at Budokan’
I took a breath – it burned my lungs,
The wave has covered me again
You showed me pictures taken once
You looked at me – and saw my pain.
And you have promised me relief
Of lotus’ petals in the mist,
And sea so warm where I could drift
Without waking from a kiss.
A little moment locked in time
No more existed – you were new,
Too young and perfect to be mine,
A gorgeous beast I never knew.
And yet I recognized the look
Of danger that had been so near.
The curtain fell. I closed the book.
You watched me walk away in fear…
