Clocks are spider-webs, their hands
are really legs that creep around,
sensors seeking hostages,
ensnaring minutes, hours, lives
in arid radials of time
whose second-hands
flash quick as knives.
The family heirloom cased in oak
with spider-legs of black on white
and Huntsmen ranged on either side
had my daughter petrified.
"If I sneak past," she used to think,
"they won't see me." Afraid to blink,
she'd sidle past the dial, wide-eyed,
and run the last few steps outside
where tall trees spread their canopies
to greet the briny-breathed sea-breeze.
