Long black veil
the rain falls black,
oblique lead-crystal
chains and blades,
icy slivers piercing
flimsy palisades
that shield pale graves.
She haunts the hillside,
long black veil
diaphanous
where stones recline;
a shiver runs
through dreaming spines,
nerves curdled
by the tocsin's whine.
In moonlight's silvery
refrain, she walks abroad,
a soul in pain, avenger
of a love betrayed,
hell's emissary,
the bride of shades;
a tremor stirs the cypress
colonnades, the sexton's
dull bell chimes...

Inspired by Diamanda Galas,
performing the ballad
"Long Black Veil"...
